Frank Mir may not have finished Roy Nelson in their hometown bout at UFC 130; however, he did give one of his most well rounded and more dominant performances since his lackluster knockout finish of Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic at UFC 119.

Mir’s grappling and wrestling were too much for “Big Country,” whose steel jaw didn’t serve him as much good as a couple pounds off that belly of his would have. As for Mir, he’s beaten a heavyweight who is probably on the cusp of Top 10 status and is still a viable threat in the division.

Here are five reasons why he’s still a serious contender.

To be honest, none of these fights was quite as bad as Arlovski-Sylvia 3 or Shamrock-Severn 2, but the percentage of big fights that are underperforming is astounding. 

So before we get into the list, I’m going to ask the million-dollar question: Is MMA less entertaining than it used to be?

Melvin Guillard woke up one morning and realized that he had to change his life. Then he did. It’s as simple as that, the UFC lightweight told MMA Fighting.

“I made a lot of mistakes after my father died,” said Guillard. “I made a lot of excuses for myself, and that’s something I don’t do now. I don’t make excuses. Everything I did, I did because I wanted to do. Nobody ever forced me to do anything. I used my dad’s death as a scapegoat to be able to get away with things I was doing, and that was wrong. My dad taught me not to make excuses, and using his death as an excuse is one of the most hurtful things I could have done.”

Some of Guillard’s personal problems are already a matter of public record, such as when he tested positive for cocaine following a loss to Joe Stevenson in 2007. But beyond just that, Guillard said, was a core problem with his attitude toward life.

Of all the people who were outraged over the judges’ decision that gave Sean Sherk a win over Evan Dunham at UFC 119, the first one to let it go and move past it might have been Dunham himself.

Others – including UFC president Dana White – can put a mental asterisk next to the defeat in the record books if they want, but don’t expect Dunham to join in.

“I definitely had a period where I thought a lot more about it, but it’s over. It’s done,” said Dunham. “I don’t think [Sherk] won that fight, but I see it for what it is. I don’t think about it too much anymore. I’ve got better things to do, like get ready to fight on the 22nd. It was a good experience, and it felt good to perform well against someone of his caliber, but when you look at it on paper, whether it’s now or five years from now, it’s a loss.”

UFC Lightweight, Kenny Florian suffered a knee injury in training and is forced to pull out of his January 22nd fight against Evan Dunham for UFN 23 also known as UFC: Fight for the Troops 2. Heavy.com is reporting that Jackson Submission Fighting teammate, Melvin Guillard will be pulled out of his bout with Yves Edwards to replace Florian. Edwards is now expected to fight Cody McKenzie. Guillard has won 6 of his last 7 bouts. Evan Dunham suffered his first loss of his professional career in a controversial split decision loss to Sean Sherk at UFC 119. UFN 23/UFC Fight for the Troops 2 is a benefit that will be held at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas.

The post-fight drug tests for last month’s UFC 119 card in Indianapolis have come back clean.

A total of nine fighters were tested following their Sept. 25 bouts at Conseco Fieldhouse, and all nine tested negative for both illegal drugs of abuse and anabolic steroids. MMA Fighting was given the results Tuesday by Andrew Means, director of the athletic division of the Indiana Gaming Commission.
