As the sport of MMA has grown over the years, so has the level of drug testing aimed at catching those fighters who are attempting to cheat the system and gain an unfair advantage over their opponent.

However, regardless of the harsh punishments that organizations like the UFC now employ, there are always fighters who continue to look for new ways to break the rules, leading to even more elaborate drug testing procedures being implemented to ensure they don’t get away with it.

In this article we’ll look at the craziest stories that have emerged from drug testing in the sport over the years, from the unbelievable lengths some fighters have gone to in order to avoid detection, through to the draconian and downright creepy measures drug testing officials have taken to try to catch them.

Kevin Randleman’s Fake Penis

If nothing else, the late Kevin Randleman gets an A for effort when it comes to his wacky attempt to cheat the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC)’s urine test when PRIDE hosted a rare event outside of Japan in Las Vegas back in 2006.

“[Randleman] basically used a fake penis, put on a pair of bike shorts, had a cup and came in to take pre-fight urine,” Former NSAC director Keith Kizer recalled in an interview with Reuters.

“He lifted up the leg of shorts, took out the fake penis and did the test. We checked on temperature, sent it to a lab, and we found it was fake urine.”

NSAC banned Randleman from fighting for a year as a result of the incident, but his actions also ended up impacting on every other fighter’s privacy from that point onwards.

”We said ‘look, now you guys have to pull down your shorts so that whoever is administering the test can see everything,” Kizer said of their efforts to stop something like this happening again in the future.

The early estimated PPV (pay-per-view) numbers for Bellator NYC are in.

Dave Meltzer of MMA Fighting is reporting that the early estimates look to be in the 90,000 to 130,000 buy range. This has to be a disappointing number for Bellator President Scott Coker and Viacom.

Unfortunately, these numbers are long the same lines as the first Bellator pay-per-view event that took place in 2014 and was headlined by Rampage Jackson vs. King Mo Lawal. That fight was a grudge match.

Bellator NYC: Sonnen vs. Silva took place on Saturday, June 24, 2017, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The promotion decided to call the PPV portion of the event Bellator NYC while the preliminary portion of the event was titled Bellator 180.

Bellator NYC was headlined by Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva. In the co-main event, MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko took on former UFC heavyweight Matt Mitrione. Rounding out the main card was Michael Chandler defending his lightweight title as well as Douglas Lima defending his welterweight title against new free-agent acquisition Lorenz Larkin, and Aaron Pico vs. Zach Freeman in a lightweight bout.

This was easily the most star studded event that Bellator has ever booked. From top to bottom, this card was stacked. Even though Sonnen and Silva are past their primes, it could be argued that they would’ve drawn very well on Spike TV.

Before the event, Coker came out and stated that they hoped to get to 200,000 buys. Following the event, David Schwarz of Spike TV talked of the Madison Square Garden event as a major success.

“I can say we are all very pleased with everything from the Bellator PPV – that, of course, includes the record gate, record domestic attendance, strong numbers for Bellator 180 and great exposure for the brand, and great momentum as we plan our next PPV. Details coming.”

Although Bellator did announce that the first PPV in 2014 did just over 100,000 buys, Schwarz said that Viacom company policy would not allow a release of the official numbers for Bellator NYC.

Yesterday (Mon., July 10, 2017), highly touted UFC middleweight contender and former Strikeforce champion Gegard Mousasi announced on The MMA Hour that he had signed a six-fight deal with Bellator MMA.

Although big name UFC fighters continue to test the free agency market, Mousasi’s jump to Bellator comes as a bit of a surprising one, as the 31-year-old is riding a five-fight winning streak, while still being in the prime of his career. He most recently defeated former champion Chris Weidman at UFC 210, and he was likely just a win or two away from a UFC title shot.

Nevertheless, Mousasi will reunite with Scott Coker and continue his career under the Bellator banner where a plethora of intriguing fights will await him.

With that being said, let’s go ahead and take a look at seven of the most exciting fights Mousasi can take in his new promotion:

A Middleweight Title Fight Against Rafael Carvalho

Starting out in Mousasi’s natural division, a middleweight title fight against reigning Bellator champion Rafael Carvlhao would be an interesting option for Mousasi, and in my opinion, a logical option for “The Dreamcatcher’s” debut.

Mousasi is without question one of the very best middleweights in the world, and likely the most accomplished fighter in Bellator’s growing middleweight division, which is why he’s deserving of a shot at gold.

Carvalho has won 14 consecutive bouts since losing his professional debut, while running through Bellator’s middleweight division with five straight victories inside the Bellator cage. He most recently scored a knockout victory over veteran Melvin Manhoef, which marked the 11th KO victory of his career, and would represent a solid challenge to welcome Mousasi to Bellator.

Wanderlei Silva Says He Returned To MMA To Fight Vitor Belfort

Late last month (June 24, 2017), Wanderlei Silva made his return to mixed martial arts in the main event of Bellator: NYC from Madison Square Garden. Late last month (June 24, 2017), Wanderlei Silva made his return to mixed martial arts in the main event of Bellator: NYC from Madison Square Garden. After having not competed in over four years, Silva took on longtime rival Chael Sonnen, but he dropped a unanimous decision loss to “The American Gangster”.

Immediately after the fight, Silva expressed interest in a rematch with Sonnen, but “The Axe Murderer” recently said that he returned to fighting for a rematch with Vitor Belfort:

“I started fighting again to fight Belfort,” Silva told MMA Brasil (via Bloody Elbow). “I wanted to fight Sonnen and I did that. But what I really want is to fight Belfort. He’s the one I want to put my hands on. And he better not come up with any broken hand excuses this time around.”

The two first fought back in 1998 when Belfort scored a TKO victory over Silva. They then coach against each other on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil in 2012, but Belfort was forced to pull out of the rematch with a broken hand.

Belfort has hit some rough times over the last few years, going just 1-3-1 before scoring a unanimous decision victory over Nate Marquardt at UFC 212 last month. The fight marked the last on Belfort’s contract with the UFC and he planned on retiring after it, but then change his tune on his future.

Perhaps Belfort could end up signing with Bellator where a rematch between him and Silva could take a place.

Action-Packed MMA Weekend Left Much to Be Figured Out (Editorial)

Chael Sonnen, Kevin Lee, Matt Mitrione and Brent Primus were all big winners over the weekend, but what stood out?
