Sugar Ray Leonard believes Conor McGregor’s best tactic for his match against Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Aug. 26 will be to “duck” the punches.

Although Leonard believes the reigning UFC lightweight champion is a tough fighter, he told TMZ Sports at LAX on Tuesday he doesn’t think the Irish mixed martial artist will be much of a challenge for Mayweather.

Leonard also said it would be “very impressive” if McGregor went the distance with Mayweather.

Significantly, Leonard noted he doesn’t believe this so-called crossover superfight will make a “mockery” of boxing. Even so, the 61-year-old is expecting a lopsided fight when Mayweather and McGregor meet in Las Vegas.

From a purist perspective, it is likely a natural boxer such as Mayweather would dominate McGregor. The Irishman is a game fighter, but he is versed in multiple disciplines and has never fought as a professional boxer, while his opponent is a master of one. Mayweather will have the know-how to avoid McGregor’s striking style and set the pace he wants to wear him down.

While the bout may not be as lopsided as Leonard suggests, it would be a surprise if it ended with anything other than Mayweather seeing his hand raised to go 50-0 for his career.

With the Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor fight set to be the biggest boxing event in years, everyone seems to want a spot on the undercard.

According to TMZ, Adrien Broner is the latest fighter looking for a bout, calling out UFC star Nate Diaz in what would be another cross-sport battle between a boxer and a mixed martial artist.

Broner is currently scheduled to face Mikey Garcia on July 29, less than one month before the Aug. 26 battle between Mayweather and McGregor.

“If I come out unmarked…like I usually do, I’ll be willing to fight on Floyd’s undercard,” Broner said of his meeting with Garcia. “If we can make it happen, let’s do it.”

Diaz, who beat McGregor by submission before losing the rematch by decision last August, would be following the Irish star’s path from UFC to boxing if this match took place. While Broner hasn’t put together the career of Mayweather, he is no slouch at 33-2 in his career.

Of course, he will first have to get past Garcia and his 36-0 record.

Meanwhile, boxing star Roy Jones Jr. has also said he wants to be a part of this fight card and is looking for a match against UFC legend Anderson Silva.

Mayweather Promotions reportedly has full control of the undercard and nothing has been announced, but these potential battles between boxers and UFC fighters would certainly keep fans from both sides entertained before the main event.

Coach: I Think McGregor Is Going To Put Mayweather Away

Conor McGregor has shown nothing but confidence regarding his August 26 boxing match with 49-0 Floyd “Money” Mayweather. Conor McGregor has shown nothing but confidence regarding his August 26 boxing match with 49-0 Floyd “Money” Mayweather. His longtime striking coach Owen Roddy also appears to be nothing but confident regarding the Irishman’s chances against “Money”:

“I have no doubt in my mind he’s gonna do it,” Roddy told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “I think it’s gonna be one of the most insane nights ever.”

Due to the fact that McGregor, the reigning UFC lightweight champion, has never competed in a professional boxing match, many are giving him a slim chance to topple Mayweather, a man many consider to be the best boxer of his generation.

With that being said, Roddy is well aware that the challenge at hand is a ‘tall task’, but he feels as if McGregor is ‘capable’ of getting the job done:

“It’s a tall task,” Roddy said. “But if anybody could do it, Conor can. He shocks the world every time. Every time he fights he’s doubted, people are like, ‘You cant do this, you cant do that.’

“We know what Conor is capable of. Conor does it every time.”

Not only does Roddy feel as if McGregor will get the job, but he even went as far as to predict a knockout victory for the “Notorious” one:

“I think he’s gonna put him away,” Roddy said. “I think he’s gonna KO him. I think it’ll take a couple of rounds. And I know my phone is about to explode, I’m sure. But look, Conor does these things. He does these exceptional things all the time. If he says he’s gonna go in and knock him out, I think he’s gonna go in and knock him out.”

As far as a specific game plan goes, Roddy wasn’t willing to get into the details, but he did admit that he sees some holes in Mayweather’s game, which is a bold claim considering the former five division world champion has come out on top against some of the very best boxers of this generation throughout his unbeaten career:

“I don’t really want to get into details on what we’re looking to do,” Roddy said. “But, I mean, nobody is perfect. Nobody is perfect. [Mayweather is] unbelievable defensively, he’s pound-for-pound one of the greatest, but everybody has holes, everybody makes mistakes, everybody has predictable patterns that they do over and over again.”

At the end of the day, Roddy feels as if McGregor’s power and reflexes will be the difference on fight night:

“Conor hits like a middleweight,” Roddy said. “You can ask any of the middleweights in our gym. He hits as hard, if not harder. It’s strange. He’s got cat-like reflexes. He’s so quick on his slips and his pulls. He’s very accurate as well. I think he’s gonna slip and fire and Mayweather will be on wobbly legs. It might be a counter, too. That’s what I see. That’s what I see in my head.”

UFC President Dana White knows what could be at stake for Conor McGregor in his upcoming fight against Floyd Mayweather.

“Listen, if McGregor knocks him out he’ll be the biggest star in sports ever,” White said, per Damon Martin of Fox Sports.

The highly anticipated boxing match is set for Aug. 26.

McGregor is a significant underdog in his first professional boxing match against the 49-0 Mayweather, after transitioning from a career in UFC. According to Odds Shark, he is plus-375 to win, meaning a $100 wager nets $375 in winnings.

However, the odds have dropped since the announcement with many bettors putting money on McGregor, per David Purdum of ESPN.

With 18 of his 21 UFC wins coming by knockout, the Irish star has a chance to pull off the massive upset over one of the best boxers in history.

Considering ESPN recently ranked McGregor as the No. 25 most famous athlete in the world, a win in his biggest bout to date would certainly put him near the top of the list as White predicts.

After months and months of speculation, it was finally announced last week that former pound-for-pound king and former five division world champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather would be coming out of retirement to take on reigning UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor on August 26, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The bout will be 12 rounds and it will be contested at 154 pounds.

In the Octagon, McGregor is most known for his striking, and to be more specific, the power in which he possesses in his hands. Due to the fact that he has never competed in a professional boxing match, however, many are giving McGregor a slim chance against Mayweather, a man many consider to be the best boxer of his generation. In fact, some have argued that McGregor will have difficulty even landing on “Money”, a defensive genius.

One man, however, is convinced that the Irishman will knockout Mayweather. Recently speaking on the topic, Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace and McGregor teammate Dillon Danis, who has quickly become one of the most outspoken voices in combat sports, said that McGregor will ‘100-percent’ finish Mayweather:

“I don’t think he’ll hang with him, I think he will knock him out, 100-percent. It will be a bit more dragged out (than one round), Mayweather is a bit more better at avoiding the shots (than Jose Aldo), so I think maybe under six,” Danis told TMZ Sports.

This is certainly a bold claim, as Mayweather possesses a perfect 49-0 professional record. Not only has he never been defeated or knocked out, but “Money” has never been knocked down, nor has he ever seriously been hurt inside the squared circle, so it’d be hard to imagine a fighter making his professional debut knocking him out.

Anything can happen in a fight, however, and McGregor, as always, is highly confident in his chances. The “Notorious” one hasn’t competed since last November when he brutally knocked out Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 from the famed Madison Square Garden in New York City to become the promotion’s lightweight champion. Since then, he has been out of action due to the birth of his first child, but he has also spent much of his time over the last few months campaigning for this fight against Mayweather.

“Money”, on the other hand, hasn’t stepped into the ring since Sept. 2015 when he scored a dominant one-sided decision victory over Andre Berto. He announced his retirement after the bout, but made it clear earlier this year that he would be willing to come out of retirement, but only to fight McGregor.

What do you make of Danis’ comments?

Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev fought for the first time last November in an entertaining 12-round bout that saw “SOG” walk away with a somewhat controversial decision victory. Many, however, had felt as if Kovalev should’ve been given the nod, which is why the rematch, which took place last night (June 17, 2017), was so pivotal.

Ward once again took home the victory in Las Vegas last night, although controversy once again surrounded the outcome. After seven rounds of back-and-forth action, Ward finished the “Krusher” in the eighth round to retain his light heavyweight titles. Some, however, felt as if the finishing blow was an illegal shot.

Unfortunately, fight fans are now left with more questions than answers involving Ward and Kovalev. In fact, Kovalev and his team are planning to appeal the stoppage, per Chris Mannix:

What do you make of the situation?
