Besides his prepared impromptu interview with HDNet’s Mike Straka hours after his suspension appeal with the California State Athletic Commission, Chael Sonnen has been uncharacteristically quiet about the ordeal.

During Thursday’s episode of MMA Live, Chael was asked for a synopsis of his thoughts on the hearing and his reduced suspension and in true Sonnen form, his answers didn’t disappoint.

"Rules are rules and they have to be followed. A government agency, which is the commission, has to be transparent, clear and decisive. They said that I didn’t disclose. I proved three different ways that I did. I had an email command, I disclosed it directly to the executive director [of CSAC] and we wrote it down on a form that was signed and dated with the head of the testing agency," Sonnen explained. "We proved all of these things, but we were still told that we didn’t disclose. I don’t know what dictionary they consult to get a definition of the word, ‘disclosure,’ but according to the ones that I read at the University of Oregon, that’s disclosure."

Muhammad Ali used to say that the heavyweight champion of the world was the champion of all champions. Of course, it’s possible he was a little biased.

It’s easy to understand the appeal of the heavyweights. It’s the biggest, baddest kids on the block vying to see who’s tougher. That’s part of why Brock Lesnar – a man who looks like the grown-up version of a high school bully straight out of central casting, crew-cut still intact – has proved to be such an irresistible enigma to MMA fans. The fact that there’s footage of him dancing around in a sombrero and flipping off the top rope probably doesn’t hurt either.

But while 2010 may have been the year of the heavyweight in MMA, with everyone from Lesnar to Fedor Emelianenko to current UFC champ Cain Velasquez rapidly swapping places in the ranks, the division seems to be in tatters heading into 2011.

LAS VEGAS — It will be a long while until the new UFC heavyweight champion defends his title.

Newly crowned champ Cain Velasquez will be out of action for six to eight months with an injured shoulder, sources with knowledge of the situation told MMA Fighting.

UFC president Dana White subsequently confirmed the news to MMA Fighting following Wednesday’s UFC 125 press conference at the MGM Grand Hotel.

Every photo tells a story and the best ones capture the complexities of the subject and situation in ways words can’t always depict.

Between our two lead photographers, Daniel Herbertson and Esther Lin, there were more than an handful of memorable imagery collected this past year on MMAFighting.com. Daniel captured all the great action in the Japanese MMA scene, while Esther was just as tireless, shooting nearly all the major U.S. events from cageside.
