Conor McGregor expresses interest in not only just fighting Nate Diaz for the third time but also doing it with a new title being on the line.

Fight fans have not seen Diaz compete inside of the Octagon since his rematch with McGregor back at UFC 202 when he suffered a majority decision loss which came five months after Diaz submitted McGregor in their first bout at UFC 196. However, he does have his next fight lined up as he’s slated to fight Dustin Poirier in a lightweight bout at the upcoming UFC 230 pay-per-view event.

A few weeks ago, there was a lot of talk that they will be fighting for a newly created 165-pound title at UFC 230. However, UFC President Dana White has since come out stating that’s not the case. Then the promotion decided to keep this fight as a co-headliner and went with an interesting main event.

Conor McGregor Expresses Interest

The former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion spoke with Karyn Bryant at the open workouts for UFC 229 where he talked about a wide range of topics. One of these topics was about the third fight with Diaz.

“The game is full of bums,” McGregor said (transcript courtesy of MMAFighting). “Ain’t s**t changed, really, so it’s good to be back. I’ve got that trilogy with Diaz. I will give that man a rematch. He gave me a rematch, so I’ll give him a rematch. [At] 155 [pounds], I’d imagine, but we’ll see because maybe we could spearhead a 165 pound division. I do believe we should go 145, 155, 165, 175, 185, even 195. Why not? There’s more belts.”

UFC 230 Main Event

McGregor went as far as stating that he thinks the Diaz-Poirier fight should be booked for the main event although it’s great for the women being booked in this position. A bout for the vacant UFC women’s flyweight title between Valentina Shevchenko and Sijara Eubanks is expected to serve as the event headliner.

“I think the Diaz-Poirier fight should be main event, personally. It’s great for the women, get them up there. I mean, if it’s the belt that they’re doing this for then why not add more divisions, more belts, more champions, more Pay-Per-Views with belts on the line. It’s gonna help the athletes. I believe, with weight-cutting and things like that. So maybe me and Diaz can do the trilogy at 165.”

Conor McGregor’s Coach Reveals Why Third Fight With Nate Diaz Should Happen

There is once again talk of why the UFC should book a third fight between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz.

McGregor’s longtime coach, John Kavanagh, has changed his tune about this potential third showdown between the two highest pay-per-view drawing stars that the promotion has under contract and are allowed to compete now.

Fight fans have not seen Diaz compete inside of the Octagon since his rematch with McGregor back at UFC 202 when he suffered a majority decision loss which came five months after Diaz submitted McGregor in their first bout at UFC 196.

On the flip side, McGregor has not been seen in the Octagon since at UFC 205 when he won the lightweight title from Eddie Alvarez.

McGregor then fought in a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather last summer in Las Vegas, Nevada where he lost to the boxing legend.

McGregor’s status as an active MMA fighter is on hold once again due to his recent arrest.

Kavanagh recently did an interview where he talked about a potential trilogy fight between Diaz and McGregor.

“Well, you know, it’s one a piece,” Kavanagh told Express Sport when discussing McGregor’s rivalry with Diaz. “It’s one a piece.

And I just think stylistically it’s a good fight. And even the lead-up, there’s a lot of fun in the lead-up. I think they work personality wise against each other in the press room and so on.

“For me, as a fan, I just think it’s a really fun matchup. So the equaliser to be drawn at 155lbs, I just think it would put a nice exclamation point and underline that part of his life. But it doesn’t look like it’s mean to be, at least not now. So we’ll see.”

Coach Claims Fans Want To See McGregor vs. Diaz 3

The biggest question that is on fight fans’ minds these days is who will be the next opponent for UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor. The biggest question that is on fight fans’ minds these days is who will be the next opponent for UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor. Will it be interim titleholder Tony Ferguson who won the title over Kevin Lee this past Saturday night at UFC 216 or will it be Nate Diaz, who has already fought McGregor twice?

McGregor’s striking coach, Owen Roddy, recently stated that both fights are intriguing options. However, he prefers a third meeting with Diaz and thinks that fight fans feel the same way.

After his win over Lee at UFC 216, Ferguson took the title to call for a title-unification bout with McGregor, who has not been seen in the world famous Octagon since last November at UFC 205 when he defeated Eddie Alaverez for the lightweight title. He last competed in August in a boxing bout against Floyd Mayweather to which he lost by 10th round RKO.

Roddy discussed McGregor’s options during a recent appearance on Submission Radio (transcript courtesy of MMA Junkie).

“He’s good, obviously,” Roddy said of Ferguson. “He wouldn’t be the interim champion if he wasn’t good. His style is, you know, it’s not traditional. It’s a bit unorthodox and stuff, but I just honestly think that Conor’s going to be way too clean for Ferguson. If Ferguson tries to stand with Conor for an extended period of time, it will be lights out, in my opinion.

“You know, he’s tough as well. He’s tough and durable, so he may take a couple of smacks, but at the end of the day, Conor’s going to be way too clean and too technical. … He won’t get touched. That’s my opinion. But yeah, it will be an interesting one, and it will be an exciting fight as well because Ferguson does come to fight, and he’s aggressive. He goes in. He looks to finish fights. So it will be exciting. But yeah, without a doubt if he wants to stand and bang with Conor, it’ll be lights out fairly quick, I think.”

Rowdy is expecting the UFC lightweight champion to return in the first quarter of 2018 and that a lot of fans would prefer to see the trilogy fight with Diaz over McGregor fight Ferguson.

“I honestly think that people would rather – like, I think people would rather see Conor vs. Diaz,” he said. “I just think it’s a more exciting fight for everybody. It’s the trilogy. The first two fights, the back and forth between the guys and the way the fights went – you know, who wouldn’t want to see the third fight? But of course, it makes sense that he fights (Ferguson), he defends the belt.

“Whatever happens, I don’t know, but I said this already: I would like to see (McGregor-Diaz 3). The Ferguson fight is an interesting one as well. Like, he’s an exciting fighter so it will be an exciting fight. So either or, either or.”

“I think even Conor said himself that he’s got unfinished business in the octagon and he wants to go back and defend his belt,” Roddy said. “So yeah, I think that’s what’s going to happen. Is he done with boxing? Probably not. If the right fight comes up and the right money’s on the table, I’m sure he would jump in and go again. You know, without a doubt. So who knows what next year is going to be like anyway? It’s going to be bigger than 2017 anyway. That’s what I imagine.”

As fight fans, we have been treated to some exciting fights throughout 2016, but there’s always room to hope for more in the coming year and given that it’s Christmas morning, there may be no better time to construct a wish list.

Check out our wish list below that contains fight fights we hope to see in 2017:

The Early Breakdown: Does "Rumble" have a chance against "Bones ...

Jon Jones vs. Anthony Johnson

Aside from rematches with champion Daniel Cormier and Alexander Gustafsson, former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones has essentially cleaned out the 205-pound division of new contenders with the exception of one man: No. 1-ranked Anthony “Rumble” Johnson.

The two men were scheduled to fight in April 2015, but legal issues forced Jones to withdraw. Now, “Bones” is currently sidelined until July dealing with a USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) suspension, while Johnson will likely take on “DC” in the coming months.

If Johnson can indeed take out Cormier, which he nearly did when the two first met, a match between him and Jones could finally be set up upon Jones’ return. From a stylistic standpoint, the bout makes quite a bit of sense, as it would pit arguably the best fighter of all-time up against one of the hardest hitters in the sport.

The UFC Needs To Book McGregor vs. Diaz III

In a recent interview, UFC President Dana White seemed to be against the idea of booking a trilogy bout between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz, saying that Diaz is the much larger man and that two fighters can only endure so many wars throughout a career.

Despite White’s reasoning, however, there are also multiple reasons why the UFC should indeed look to book the rubber match between McGregor and Diaz.

First off, it seems as if there has come a time where the UFC is lacking legitimate stars. In recent memory, the promotion has been seen creating new divisions and various interim titles simply to create main events for cards in need, which is why it’s strange to see White not in favor of a money-making bout between two of the sport’s biggest stars. To be frank, there is simply no bigger fight in mixed martial arts at the moment other than a third bout between the “Notorious” one and the Stockton bad boy.

Secondly, with McGregor now holding the 155-pound belt, the two could do battle with a title on the line, which would make the fight as well as the rivalry all the more intriguing. No matter what White says, Diaz has spent the majority of his career competing as a lightweight and he’s currently ranked No. 6 in the division.

Obviously top contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson are more deserving of the next shot at McGregor’s newly acquired title, but we have learned that rankings mean very little in this day and age. Also, the No. 1-ranked Nurmagomedov and the No. 2-ranked Ferguson have been rumored to be fighting each other, which could open to door for Diaz to slide up depending on how much time McGregor is taking off.

Finally, McGregor and Diaz simply need to settle the score. The two have split wins and losses in two welterweight bouts with Diaz submitting the Irishman at UFC 196 and McGregor winning a majority decision in the rematch at UFC 202. After the rematch, both men showed interest in a third bout with McGregor saying that it would have to be at 155-pounds.

With these points in mind, there is no better time than now to make the fight happen. The weight is set and the stars have aligned for McGregor to finally defend a title against a rival in a bout that is simply too monumental to pass up.

What’s your opinion of the potentially historic trilogy bout?
