With both top lightweights coming off of big losses in huge spots, Edson Barboza and Kevin Lee met in a crucial lightweight bout in the main event of tonight’s (Sat., April 21, 2018) UFC Fight Night 128 from the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

After some small rankings shifts at lightweight following previous No. 5 Dustin Poirier’s win over previous No. 6 Justin Gaethje in an all-out slugfest in the main event of last week’s UFC on FOX 29, the main event in Atlantic City brought the rare occurrence of the same rankings match-up in back-to-back weeks with No. 5 Barboza and No. 6 Lee.

Lethal striker Barboza was coming off of a brutally one-sided loss to current 155-pound champion Khabib Nurmagomedov last December, which snapped a three-fight win streak for the Brazilian Muay Thai wiz.

Lee, meanwhile, was coming off a submission loss to Tony Ferguson for the interim title at last October’s UFC 216, a fight which he was dominating in the early rounds before gassing as a perceived side effect of staph infection and a nearly missed weight cut. He actually missed weight for this fight, however, making it a 157-pound catchweight.

Both fighters needed to rebound strong to stay near the top of the crowded UFC lightweight title landscape.

The fight kicked off with Barboza throwing a kick as planned. A low kick scored and Barboza snapped some punches behind it. Lee pushed the pace on the feet, however, looking for a takedown and getting a trademark double-leg near the cage wall. Lee mounted Barboza and rained hammerfists, passing to side control and then the half guard. Lee stacked Barboza and scored a big shot, again moving to side control and then mounting him to land big shots. Lee began raining down monster elbows and punches that didn’t end, looking for a choke briefly before continuing to strike.

Lee was dominant, landing more hammerfists and then posturing up from Barboza’s guard to score more shots. He ground Barboza yet again and landed more elbows, closing out brutally one-sided frame by mounting Barboza another time.

The second frame began with Lee pressing the action. He landed a big shot and went for another takedown that Barboza avoided for the time being. Lee stalked him again and landed a straight right, throwing a brutal body kick that had Barboza in pain. Lee shot for the big double leg and got the big slam this time, again raining ground and pound from inside Barboza’s guard. A massive shot found its mark and more followed, and Lee passed to side control. Mount soon followed and more damage was the result, with Lee locking Barboza’s wrist and raining down huge elbows. and Barboza was unable to defend himself. The spent Barboza somehow survived the round.

The third frame started with Lee pushing forward, but Barboza landed a stiff kick. Lee responded with a high kick attempt, looking for another takedown attempt that was stuffed. Barboza landed a low kick and then turned the tables with his trademark spinning kick, badly wobbling “The Motown Phenom” to the point he appeared almost done.

Lee persevered, taking his opponent down to weather the storm. This time, Barboza returned to his feet, however, and went back to throwing huge kicks. Lee pressed the pace nonetheless, landing his jab. Barboza went for a flying knee and Lee landed a left hook and a right, scoring a stiff body kick behind them. Barboza landed one of his own shortly after it, and Lee ended the third round landing a high kick.

The fight went into the championship rounds with Lee snapping shots. Barboza scored a huge body kick and a head kick, and the fight turned into a slugfest. Lee went for the takedown, smartly enough, and began controlling Barboza against the fence. He landed further ground strikes, scoring with nothing too fight-altering but winning him the round by a long shot. Lee showed the level of his ground skill, mounting Barboza and unleashing endless torrents of strikes. The punches added up in bunches, and Lee closed the fourth round by seeking a choke submission.

The fifth round saw Barboza snap a looping hook. Lee pressed forward and Barboza threw another spinning kick. Lee landed and Barboza was bloodied. Still, the Brazilian scored two body kicks. Lee went for a takedown and Barboza defended well. On the break, it appeared that one man lost his mouthpiece, but it was deemed to be tape by the referee. During the stoppage, the cageside doctors looked at the badly bloodied and battered Barboza and called off the fight.

Final Result: Kevin Lee def. Edson Barboza via R5 TKO (doctor’s stoppage, 2:18)

After hosting an event in Arizona last weekend, the UFC will head back to the east coast tomorrow night (April 21, 2018), as UFC Fight Night 128 is set to take place live on Fox Sports 1 from the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

In the main event, No. 5-ranked lightweight contender Edson Barboza and will face off with No. 6 Kevin Lee in a five-round affair. The co-main event, meanwhile, will play host to a rematch between former 155-pound champion Frankie Edgar and longtime 145-pound contender Cub Swanson.

Also on the main card, heavyweights Justin Willis and Chase Sherman will do battle in a potentially under-the-radar slugfest.

Without further ado, let’s take a deeper look into UFC Fight Night 128’s marquee fights:

Edson Barboza vs. Kevin Lee

UFC Fight Night 128’s main event will play host to a pivotal bout between two of the world’s best lightweights, both of whom are coming off losses and in need of a victory.

Barboza, arguably the very best striker in the division, is coming off of a one-sided loss to current 155-pound champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Prior to that, however, he had won three straight fights.

Stylistically, Barboza’s bread and butter has always been his striking. Utilizing a vicious Muay Thai approach, Barboza possesses some of the best kicks in the sport. Whether he’s kicking to the leg, throwing spinning kicks, or firing off switch kicks, the Brazilian kicks with incredible speed and power.

It is important to note, however, that he has improved his boxing and footwork quite a bit since making the move to New Jersey to train under Mark Henry. And it’s safe to say that he’ll have the advantage in this category over Lee.

In terms of grappling, Barboza has seemed to continuously improve his takedown defense in recent years and it’ll need to be on point in this bout. Lee may not be a wrestler the caliber of Nurmagomedov, but “The Eagle” repeatedly took Barboza down in their UFC 219 bout, paving a path to victory for fellow lightweights.

On the ground, Barboza rarely finds himself in positions to be submitted, as he’s only been submitted twice through 24 matches. He also owns a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. If he ends up on his back though, he’ll need to smart defensively to avoid Lee’s ground-and-pound.

“The Motown Phenom”, meanwhile, is coming off of a loss to Tony Ferguson for the interim title last October. Prior to that, he had won five consecutive fights with four of those victories coming by way of stoppage.

Stylistically, Lee isn’t primarily known for his striking skillset, but he has improved his boxing in recent memory. Showing improved footwork and defense, Lee is also a phenomenal athlete and an explosive fighter. I’m not sure striking with Barboza would be his best option, though.

In terms of grappling, Lee is a high-level wrestler. In addition to his NCAA Division II wrestling background, Lee’s power, size and physical strength aid him in this category and I feel he’ll have a sizable wrestling advantage over Barboza.

“The Motown Phenom” also has eight submission wins to his credit, as he has a knack for taking an opponent’s back and finding a choke. Barboza is tough to submit, but Lee may have the advantage in this department as well.

Ultimately, I’d give Barboza the advantage in the striking department and Lee the advantage in the grappling department, which leads me to believe that whichever fighter implements his game plan best will come out on top.

It’s important to note that Lee actually missed weight for the fight, so it’s unclear if a difficult weight cut took place, but I’m going to side with him regardless. I feel as if he’ll be able to use his strength, power, and wrestling to ground and control Barboza. I’m not sure he’ll be able to submit the Brazilian, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him score a stoppage via strikes.

Prediction: Kevin Lee def. Edson Barboza via fourth-round TKO

Earlier today the MMA world was hit with the news that top lightweight Kevin Lee had missed weight during the early weigh-ins for his main event with Edson Barboza at this weekend’s (Sat., April 21, 2018) UFC Atlantic City.

The miss, where ‘The Motown Phenom’ came in one pound over the non-title fight limit of 156 pounds, was significant in that he had nearly missed weight for his interim title fight with Tony Ferguson at last year’s UFC 216, coming in extremely late and weighing following a weight cut that ‘damn near killed him’ while he was dealing with a staph infection.

But he wasn’t dealing with such an ailment this time around, so the inevitable questions of if he should move up to welterweight are swirling this afternoon. Lee issued a statement on Instagram to clarify that this was actually the first time he had ever missed weight, apologizing to the UFC, Dana White, and his opponent before saying he just ran out of time:

“For the first time ever in my athletic career since high school I’ve missed weight this morning. I just ran outta time. I apologize @Ufc @danawhite@edsonbarbozajr tomorrow Imma go put on a show”
