UFC lightweight and welterweight Nate Diaz has a reputation in the mixed martial arts world as being a bit of a bad boy. His ‘gangster’ image is part of what helps sell his fights, and people have come to admire his no-BS style of interviews. Since beating the UFC featherweight champion in a thrilling 170-pound affair at UFC 196, the younger of the infamous Diaz brothers has finally stepped in to the limelight.

The Diaz brothers have always been cult idols, with a following within the MMA community that rivalled many other mainstream stars, but it really wasn’t until the last two years that they had received the attention they fought so hard for over the years.

For Nick Diaz, after losing in fights to Carlos Condit, Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva (later a no-contest), his push in to super stardom came thanks to a highly controversial hearing with the Nevada Athletic Commission. After popping for weed in the fight with Silva, during which time the Brazilian was also caught but for anabolic steroids, Nick received a hefty five year ban from competition. is plight and eventual lighter sentence saw huge stars backing the ‘free Nick Diaz’ cause.

So who are the Diaz brothers? If you ask anyone in their community, they might well have a very different opinion than your average MMA fan. This post from Gracie Fighter 209 on Instagram shows Nate Diaz receiving an award from Assemblyman Jim Cooper. He is honored for hard work and giving back to the community:

Of course it wouldn’t be a Nate Diaz story if we didn’t look back to the single most publicized moment of his wild career. The day after Diaz’s submission victory over Conor McGregor will forever be known as ‘Not Surprised Sunday,’ as his epic post fight words echoed across the web in a frenzy of hilarity and disbelief.

Here’s to you Nate Diaz!

It’s no secret that reigning UFC featherweight champion the “Notorious” Conor McGregor is beloved by his homeland of Ireland. In fact, tens of thousands of passionate Irish fans typically follow him to wherever he’s fighting to pack out arenas.

It’s widely clear that McGregor is seen as a hero to the Irish people, but this ‘heroic’ status actually recently impacted a commercial the “Notorious” one had starred in.

According to the Irish ad regulator (Per Businessinsider.com), McGregor is viewed as ‘a hero of the young’, which is why his commercial with Budweiser was recently banned by the Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland (ASAI).

According to the policies and codes of the ASAI, alcohol cannot be promoted by heroes or heroines to the young, putting McGregor’s commercial in breach of their guidelines:

“The committee, having regard to Conor McGregor’s status as world champion and profile, considered that he is a hero of the young for the purpose of clause 9.7(c) of the code,” the ASAI said in a statement.

Attempting to explain its side of the story, Budweiser claimed that the Irish knockout artist was not an ‘identifiable hero of the young’. The company also said that their commercial only aired on channels and during programmes which had an overwhelming adult audience for both traditional and digital media channels”.

Despite their reasoning, the commercial has been pulled nonetheless.

McGregor currently doesn’t have his next fight set after he was infamously scrapped from his scheduled UFC 200 (July 9, 2016) rematch with Nate Diaz, although it is expected that the sides will come to an agreement for the rematch soon.

The “Notorious” one is coming off of a submission loss to Diaz at last March’s UFC 196.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor seems to have mended some recently burned bridges with his bosses. After taking a stance against the UFC regarding his media obligations for the rematch with Nate Diaz, the Irish star was dropped from UFC 200 on July 9 and engaged in a ‘publicized civil war’ with his employers It was a war he’d eventually end up coming out of relatively unscathed, although his removal from the milestone pay-per-view card remained official.

The once consummate company man McGregor had attempted to throw a spanner in the works of the organization that helped him become a multi millionaire. Thus is the struggle between a man’s worth and the amount of money his bosses are willing to pay. Whether or not the rumours of a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather were just a media stunt is unclear, but it remains a highly unlikely fight in reality.

His most recent media appearance, a sit down with ESPN, saw McGregor discuss openly about his problems with the UFC, and it sounds as though they are now squared away. From their website is an interesting conversation that was not included in the initial release of the interview, where McGregor talks far more about the effects of Joao Carvalho’s death and the harassment from the media in he time since.

joao-carvalho[1]

Carvalho was a Portugese fighter who, while taking on one of McGregor’s team mate’s in Dublin, suffered fatal injury in the cage. He died after two days in a local hospital. He was just 28 years of age. The tragic circumstances reverberated around the MMA community worldwide, but the host of Joao’s final fight perhaps bore the biggest brunt. The Irish MMA scene went from a buzz to a solemn and overcast sport overnight, and once again McGregor was at the forefront.

‘The Notorious’ was filmed cheering his team mate to victory on that fateful night, and it led to the obvious media coverage we’ve come to expect these days. Headlines from the maistream papers pretty much read ‘McGregor cheers as team mate kills a man.’ It turns out that terrible moment in MMA history impacted on the upcoming events, that would once again turn the mixed martial arts world on it’s head…

Without a high-profile card this weekend, much of the news in the MMA world has centered around the heavily hyped potential boxing match between UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and retired boxing great Floyd Mayweather Jr.

It seemed to be taken to an all-new level this week when “Money” reportedly offered McGregor $50 million of just that to face him inside the squared circle, and “The Notorious” must have taken that as a sign, as he wildly proclaimed that Mayweather “needs him” instead of the opposite scenario.

The proposed super fight seems like a far-off scenario with McGregor under contract with the UFC, and indeed his next fight in the Octagon seems close to being booked after he met with the UFC brass this week, even if a similar meeting with his prospective opponent Nate Diaz, who infamously submitted McGregor at March’s UFC 196, didn’t go as well.

If it does somehow happen, however, there’s another high-profile MMA fighter that wants to try her hand at the sweet science on the card. That woman is Invicta FC featherweight titleholder Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Justino, who recently made her UFC debut by decimating Leslie Smith at May 14’s UFC 198 from Curitiba, Brazil.

She was recently liked to a potential fight with rising women’s bantamweight contender Germaine de Randamie at July’s UFC 201 this week, but Cyborg is apparently playing hardball, stating she would rather defend her Invicta title at 145 pounds for some odd reason. And there could be another reason for that, because now, she’s apparently got some other plans in mind.

Justino spoke up on Twitter this weekend to volunteer her services for a spot on the potentially massive McGregor vs. Mayweather event:

The brutalizing knockout artist has previously competed in Muay Thai, and although she did lose to champion Jorina Baars, she’s definitely one of the biggest names in all of female combat sports. With that said, she hasn’t exactly been tested in the cage or ring outside of the Baars fight, so it’s a quandary as to exactly whom she’d potentially face in a boxing match as part of the undercard for McGregor vs. Mayweather.

She’s got the potential to be a huge star in the UFC, but Cyborg appears focused on boxing, telling TMZ that she already has a coach that will “have me ready.”

Do you want to see her box on the potentially massive event, or do you believe the fight is so unlikely that speculating on the undercard is pointless?

Conor McGregor: Floyd Mayweather Needs Me

Reigning UFC featherweight champion the “Notorious” Conor McGregor has experienced a roller coaster of media attention in recent memory regarding his withdrawal from his scheduled UFC 200 (July 9, 2016) rematch with Nate Diaz as well as his hypothetical boxing match with retired pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

Aside from his now infamous subtle tweets, McGregor has remained relatively quiet, but he recently did an interview that appeared on SportsCenter this morning (May 22, 2016) in which he discussed the current state of his career.

As far as the UFC 200 spectacle goes, in which McGregor was pulled from the card after declining to meet the UFC’s full promotional requirements, the Irishman said that he was simply looking to do what was best for himself after previously drowning himself in the media:

“It was a publicized civil war. I was going through some things, there was some crazy stuff going on back home, and I wanted to be focused on my training. I was in a time where I was figuring out something. I didn’t just shut out and say no to everything. I just wanted to do reasonable media, and then all of a sudden it’s three months from the fight we’ve got to drag you forty hour flights to come and do a runaround – New York, Vegas, California, seventy press conferences, seventy talk shows, adverts. I only made you four hundred million last week. I need to get right.” McGregor said.

From McGregor’s point of view, it appears as if he was looking for more time away from the lights and the cameras, and for the ability to focus on training.

However, he and the UFC were clearly on different pages, and the situation eventually exploded:

“The lack of communication, and they (UFC) weren’t having it, they were trying to push back on me, I was trying to push back on them, and then it was like look – it blew up then.”

McGregor did indeed admit that at times he felt a bit of regret, but in the end he did what was right for himself:

“There were times when seeing the press conferences take place, and I was like I should’ve just jumped on the damn flight. I should’ve just stuck it out and went with it. But sometimes you’ve got to do what’s right for you, and not do what’s right for everyone else, and especially if you’ve done what’s right for everyone else a million times over.”

As far as the rumors regarding a potential showdown with Mayweather go, it appears to be just that: rumors, and speculation just as many had expected.

The “Notorious” one would however be open to the fight, but in no way would he take a pay cut in order to make it happen. According to the Irishman, Mayweather needs him:

“It was him that leaked the rumor. He gets $100 million, and I get $7 million. That is a pay cut to me. I don’t take pay cuts. I thought boxing was where the money was at. Seven million is absolutely laughable. He’s talking $100 million. I’m also talking $100 million. I’m 27 years of age and I’m just about halfway through a $100 million contract,” McGregor said.

“At 27 years of age, Floyd Mayweather was on Oscar de la Hoya’s undercard. Compare that. Who doesn’t want to conquer both worlds? He’s getting old now. I have the size, I have the reach, I have the heighth, I have the youth. He needs me, I don’t need him. That’s the truth of it. Who else he can fight? He fights someone else in the boxing realm.. all of a sudden the pay goes from $100 million to $15 million. He needs me. If he wants to talk, we can talk, but it’s me who is in control here.”

Despite his recent loss, and the madness that has surrounded him as of late, one thing is for sure: the same old brash, outspoken, and confident Conor McGregor is still around.
