And so it begins…

UFC 200 is set to go down on July 9 in Las Vegas, at the brand new T-Mobile Arena, and it’s going to be one heck of an event. The backstory until last week was all about Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor’s rematch, but now it’s a second dance of a different kind that will headline the milestone pay-per-view bonanza. With McGregor pulled from the card, and Diaz currently without an opponent, we now have the rematch do-over between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones to look forward to as the main attraction.

But that’s just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Miesha Tate will return for the first defense of her UFC women’s bantamweight strap, taking on Amanda Nunes in a highly anticipated co-main event. Then we’ve got the interim featherweight belt on the line for Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar, and former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will battle Travis Browne also on the main card.

Johnny Hendricks takes on Kelvin Gastelum, Diego Sanchez will face Joe Lauzon, Derrick Brunson fights Gegard Mousasi, then Gomi vs. Miller, Zingano vs. Pena and Northcutt vs. Marin round off the thus announced UFC 200 card. Don’t forget that UFC president Dana White recently teased more big announcements for the July 9 festivities, so stay tuned!

Check out the first instalment of the UFC 200 embedded series, taking an in depth look at the first week of the media tour, and check out the full UFC 200 fight card as it stands currently.

‘The Notorious’ has once again sent social media in to meltdown…

It was only last week that an apparent rift between Conor McGregor and the UFC tore a hole in the biggest card this year. UFC 200 was set to feature a rematch between McGregor and Nate Diaz, who had defeated the featherweight champion in a welterweight showcase bout at UFC 196. ‘The Notorious’ declared he was retiring young in this now infamous Tweet, that smashed Kobe Bryant’s previous record for most retweeted sports personalty:

The obvious impact of the loss of a main event star like McGregor would be a large dent in the milestone pay-per-view’s sales. UFC president Dana White confirmed McGregor had been pulled from the UFC 200 card, claiming the Irishman had refused to attend his first media obligations for the event.

Then came his latest Tweet, just this morning Conor McGregor announced he was back on the UFC 200 line up, with another Tweet:

So just one week after missing his first week of media obligations, and some 370,000 retweets later, McGregor ha declared himself back on the card at UFC 200. That said, there’s been no response from the promotion as of yet, but of course Twitter has exploded in to life in reaction to ‘The Notorious” announcement.

Check out the best Twitter reactions:

Less media work and more money are a winning combination, aye. Glad the McGregor/UFC saga was resolved fast. Best for everyone around MMA.

After all is said and done, hasn’t McGregor put in a ton of work already?

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is unique in many ways. He has a natural talent for both fighting and selling events for the promotion, something the UFC is not used to at this level. So grand is McGregor’s gift of the gab that many argue he has began to surpass the promotion itself in popularity, something that UFC president Dana White is clearly not happy with. All this has led to a week of constant McGregor and UFC 200 headlines, each of which stemmed from this single Tweet.

Conor McGregor’s retirement Tweet this past Tuesday set in motion a set of highly unexpected happenings, and eventually led to the highly entertaining UFC 200 press conference last night, at which ‘The Notorious’ was not present. Although he had swiftly un-retired just days after that first announcement, the damage was apparently already done. The beef seems to have come from McGregor’s reluctance to attend the first week of media obligations for his scheduled UFC 200 rematch with Nate Diaz, something the promotion was not willing to accept.

Dana White confirmed that McGregor was being pulled from the July 9 mega fight with Diaz, in a strange twist of circumstances. We all sat back and witnessed the Irish star rise to prominence in just a matter of years under the UFC banner, and suddenly he is throwing a spanner in the works in the form of his pseudo retirement and refusal to commit to the media tour. So how/why has this happened? Well, assuming that the facts thus far are accurate, this seems to be a kind of phallic comparison between McGregor and the UFC brass.

During the UFC 200 presser last night (April 22, 2016) McGregor sent out another Tweet, this time pointing out how much he’d made the UFC in his last eight month/three fight stretch…

It’s not long now (hopefully) until we see Conor McGregor fight Nate Diaz at UFC 200. The two colorful characters first faced off at UFC 196 back in March, and it was a typical cult hero vs. theatrical villain kind of affair. McGregor had rallied ticket sales in al his previous fights using his razor sharp wit and excellent ability to break his opponents just using the power of speech. He tried his old tricks against Diaz when Rafael dos Anjos fell out from the original booking, but it turned out the Stockton grappler wasn’t going to be playing those games.

Diaz stood firm in the midst of a barrage of trash talk from McGregor in the 11 days leading up to their fight, and made the Irish star eat his words when they eventually collided in the octagon.

McGregor gassed coming in to the second round of their highly entertaining bout, and Diaz smelled ‘red panty night’ in the making. ‘The Notorious’ had thrown everything at Diaz, yet the chin was holding up just fine. Just as the Diaz brothers had predicted, McGregor shot for the takedown, and it was just over from that point on. Diaz sunk in the fight finishing rear naked choke, and suddenly the UFC’s plans had been shattered, or so it seemed.

A. McGregor 1

So win or lose, surely it’s back to the featherweight division for McGregor after this fight. Of course there’s always the possibility the UFC will see cash signs in a potential lightweight title fight, but surely the circus at the top of the 145-pound category needs sorting out first. So if he indeed does go back down, but loses his title, what happens next?

From a quiet news week in the mixed martial arts community, to three days of madness. The headline news has come out of nowhere on this non-event week, as the promotion announced a number of huge fights, the biggest being the UFC 200 main event. Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz will rematch their UFC 196 welterweight showdown, staying at 170 pounds, in the main event of the July 9 milestone pay-per-view card. Also announced, and at first thought to be the co-main event, was the interim featherweight title bout.

Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar will duke it out for the junior strap, but UFC president Dana White later said this was not the co-main for UFC 200, and that exact fight is yet to be announced. So the speculation on the (likely) title fight that will fill the second place spot at the landmark PPV will continue, and overnight we’ve seen many social media reactions to the announcements so far for July 9.
