Georges St-Pierre is still on the mend following his UFC middleweight title win last year.

The Canadian UFC legend defeated Michael Bisping in the main event of UFC 217 on pay-per-view (PPV). With the victory, “GSP” became one of few men to win a title in two different weight classes in the UFC. Following the victory, however, St-Pierre was forced to vacate his title after contracting colitis.

St-Pierre believes this occurred as a result of the weight he gained to make middleweight. He offered an update on his health status to MMA Fighting recently. St-Pierre noted almost all his symptoms are gone and he’s slowly dosing down his anti-inflammatory medication:

“Definitely the worst has passed,” St-Pierre said. “I’m dosing down the medication that I have. The medication is anti-inflammatory, so you have to dose it down. Not in one shot, you can’t stop in one shot, but I’m dosing it down every month and soon it will be past, a story of the past. As it goes right now, pretty much all of the symptoms are almost gone.”

Upcoming MMA Return?

While he’s inching closer to an Octagon return, “GSP” isn’t going to rush anything. His fight against Bisping was his first after a four-year hiatus from the sport. Now fans will likely have to wait over a year before seeing him back in the Octagon again.

St-Pierre is reluctant to sign a contract to fight anyone right now. He said once the contract is signed, the mental warfare begins. The former two-division titleholder doesn’t want to put that stress on his body while he’s not fully recovered from his illness:

“I don’t want any contract to fight somebody right now,” St-Pierre said. “Because the minute you sign a contract, the mental warfare starts, and stress is something that amplifies everything. So I want to make sure I deal with it, I take care of it, and when everything will be finished, I will be able to look forward.

“My health is the most important thing for me. [But I’m] absolutely not [closing the door on fighting again]. I’m keeping the door open. When I close it, then people will know. But right now it’s held open.”

UFC welterweight Abdul Razak Alhassan has been indicted on sexual assault charges stemming from his April arrest in Tarrant County, Texas.

Star-Telegram reporter Deanna Boyd reported the news on Tuesday (Sept. 25 2018). She added that a grand jury in Tarrant County, Texas, issued the two-count indictment for the fighter on Monday. Alhassan was arrested in April regarding these charges and is currently free on $20,000 bail.

Alhassan has been accused of raping two women inside their homes. Boyd reported that Alhassan allegedly drove both intoxicated women home from a bar in March. The UFC fighter allegedly committed the sexual assaults in the women’s home.

One of the victims told investigators that she was far too inebriated to remember anything from that night. However, the other women said she remembered Alhassan raping her and then raping her friend.

Alhassan’s attorney filed a motion to modify the bond conditions so that he could continue to train and compete at UFC 228. A judge granted the fighter his request, in so allowing Alhassan to remove his GPS monitor and leave Tarrant County.

Because of the special conditions granted to Alhassan, he was able to fight at UFC 228 where he demolished Niko Price in the first round.

Alhassan’s stock was on the rise prior to these allegations. It remains to be seen just how these charges will play out. but it doesn’t look good for the native Ghanaian right now.

MMA legend Georges St-Pierre acknowledges that current UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is one of the best ever. But pump your brakes on crowning him the greatest of all-time just yet.

Woodley toppled formerly undefeated challenger Darren Till with a dominant second-round submission in the featured bout of September 8’s UFC 228. Till landed only one strike in the fight.

The victory lead to Woodley’s coach Din Thomas awarding him his Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt for first UFC submission. It also lead to Thomas claiming Woodley was close to attaining welterweight G.O.A.T. status. Not so fast, however, says the consensus current 170-pound G.O.A.T.

Longtime former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre spoke in an interview with FanSided to give his opinion on the feverishly-discussed debate. St-Pierre gave respect to Woodley for beating Till, but stopped short of crowning him the greatest 170 pounds had ever seen:

“The greatest is hard to say; there is also another guy named Matt Hughes who at one point was one of the greatest,” St-Pierre said. “There are some fighters, I’m not saying Tyron Woodley is one of these guys; he is an incredible fighter, but there are guys in this sport sometimes they become champion and they have an easier time than others in terms of opponent, in terms of challenges.”

Strength Of Opponents

St-Pierre defended his title nine times to Woodley’s three and one retention due to a draw.

So Woodley is one of the best ever at welterweight, but his overall body of work still pales in comparison to that of “GSP.” St-Pierre appeared to throw some shade at Woodley’s challenges in the previous quote, yet clarified that by respecting ‘The Chosen One’s’ opponents shortly after.

St-Pierre believes Woodley is in a good spot in terms of legacy because of it:

“Tyron had to go through great fighters like Stephen Thompson and his last performance was outstanding against Darren Till. There was a lot of hype on Darren Till because he was undefeated. Tyron just shut him down incredibly good. Tyron is in a good way in terms of legacy and in terms of being the greatest.”

There is a conceivable way to find out just whom is the best welterweight of all-time, and that’s for them to fight.

However, ‘Rush’ recently discussed why he doesn’t want to fight Woodley right now. He believes he stands little to gain in terms of legacy and popularity, while Woodley stands to gain everything in both. That could be true from a certain point of view.

St-Pierre has been out of action since he won the UFC middleweight title by submitting Michael Bisping in the main event of last November’s UFC 217 from Madison Square Garden. He vacated the title shortly thereafter and has been linked to a new comeback fight. There are whispers he’ll face the winner of October 6’s Khabib Nurmagomeov vs. Conor McGregor lightweight title bout.

Nothing is official, of course, and St-Pierre’s return is beyond up in the air. Just don’t count on it being against Woodley.

The UFC has been dealt some unfortunate news with Tyron Woodley sidelined the rest of the year.

The UFC welterweight champion revealed to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani today that he will undergo hand surgery, therefore sidelining him for 8-12 weeks. Woodley tore three ligaments in his thumb in his dominant second-round submission of Darren Till at UFC 228. He’ll undergo the procedure to prevent arthritis:

“I dislocated my thumb in the [Darren Till] fight and by doing that I tore three ligaments,” Woodley said. “They are doing a shoestring surgery to provide more stability for my hand and minimize the potential arthritis.”

Woodley will undergo the surgery in mid-October, putting his return at January to February as a result. He would need to recover and go through a full training camp. Shoulder surgery sidelined him for 14 months before his UFC 228 return.

Woodley and Colby Covington were set to meet in a rivalry-fueled match-up in the main event of November 3’s UFC 230 from NYC. Covington recently denied that rumor. The outspoken public enemy No. 1 claims the UFC ‘hates’ Woodley’ and won’t give him the fight because of it.

UFC 230 currently has no main event as of this writing. Nate Diaz will return to battle Dustin Poirier in the co-main event. A potential fight between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson is a possibility. Dana White claims Jones won’t return until 2019.

The biggest fight possible in the UFC women’s flyweight division is official. UFC Canada announced this evening (Thurs., September 20, 2018) that Valentina Shevchenko vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk has been signed.

The fight will go down at December 8’s UFC 231 from the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario:

Shevchenko was scheduled to meet Nicco Montano at September 8’s UFC 228. The plans fell apart when Montano fell ill. The UFC soon decided to strip her and vacate the title. debuted at 125 pounds with a brutal showing versus Priscila Cachoeira in February after two losses to women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes.

“Bullet” is the sort of uncrowned champion at 125 pounds due to her performance against larger opponents.

She’ll have to get past Jedrzejczyk to become the official champion. The former “Joanna Champion” suffered two straight losses to current champion Rose Namajunas. She rebounded with a decision win over Tecia Torres at UFC on FOX 30 this July. The vicious weight cut down to 115 pounds has clearly affected her in her recent bouts. Jedrzejczyk’s move was an expected one.

Shevchenko and Jedrzejczyk have actually fought three times in Muay Thai. “Bullet” won all three of the fights, which certainly should make her a solid favorite. Shevchenko has been largely flawless outside of her two fight with Nunes. Her well-round skillset makes her one of the most feared fighters in women’s mixed martial arts because of it.

Will she take home the women’s 125-pound title as a result?

The loudest trash talker in the UFC says Tyron Woodley won’t get the coveted UFC 230 main event slot.

Interim UFC welterweight champion Colby Covington (or former champion, who knows) has ramped up his callouts of Woodley. A sinus injury for Covington prolonged their expected title fight earlier this year. The consensus is they’ll meet for the title next because of their long-standing rivalry.

Woodley recently stated he would be ready to face Covington at November’s UFC 230 on one condition. Covington isn’t buying that, however, telling BJ Penn (via MMA Mania) that was “fake news.” They won’t be fighting at that coveted event because the UFC simply hates Woodley according to Covington:

“Tyron, that’s fake news about his hand being hurt. He was saying he was ready to go, but I think it’s more that the UFC, they don’t want to give him that spot.

“They don’t want to reward him that main event, ’cause they hate him. He doesn’t know how to sell fights, he doesn’t know how to promote fights, he just complains, man. He just consistently shoots himself in the foot every time he opens his mouth.”

Woodley has received an endless amount of criticism for many topics. Some fans believe he is not promoted due to the fact he put on two boring title fights against Demian Maia and Stephen Thompson last year. UFC president Dana White has repeatedly blasted Woodley in the media.

Woodley claims the UFC is unwilling to promote him, at least in part, due to racism. He believes the UFC has failed to secure him the African-American contingent of Floyd Mayweather fans.

Regardless, November 3’s UFC 230 from Madison Square Garden in New York City is without a main event. The pay-per-view card features the long-awaited return of Nate Diaz against Dustin Poirier. That means it should sell well on pay-per-view.

It’s unknown who will headline the event, however, and the UFC may not want to give Woodley the massive PPV cash that comes along with it.

Should they?
