Sometimes, the UFC shoots itself in the foot with problems that were easily avoidable.

Whether it’s just bad matchmaking or more nefarious issues, the UFC has gone into crisis mode more often than they’d like to admit, and it seems like its been happening with concerning regularity lately.

With mainstream media attention and publicity at an all-time high, the UFC needs to learn from their mistakes of the past to ensure a better product, but even as the world’s best MMA promotion by a wide margin, they could sometimes do much better in dealing with the curveballs the notoriously volatile fight game throws their way.

We broke down the six biggest messes the UFC could have easily avoided, and the results may surprise you:

6. Jon Jones vs. Chael Sonnen

This match-up never made sense in the first place, yet the UFC insisted on putting it together.

They tried it at UFC 151 on short notice after Dan Henderson was forced out with a knee inury, which Jones declined. The UFC then canceled the entire card altogether.

Ignoring fate, they put on the fight at UFC 159 instead, and Jones predictably smashed Sonnen in the first round. However, Jones did break his toe in a freak accident while defending a takedown, and one wonders whether Sonnen could have won the belt had the bout gone past the first round. Jones’ big toe was completely broken in the most grotesque way; he had snagged it in a tear in the Octagon canvas.

But the writing was on the wall the entire time the UFC insisted on putting together a Jones vs. Sonnen title fight.

They tried to punish Jones for not accepting the bout on a week’s notice, yet in reality, it was the fans and other fighters on UFC 151 who were punished.

‘The Count’ believes he’ll do better without a full camp…

It seems that 2016 is yet another year of the injury bug, as pay-per-view and fight night bouts continue being laid to waste by last minute accidents. The most recent of these main event smashing injuries was Chris Weidman’s withdrawal from the June 4 UFC 199 PPV card in Inglewood, California. ‘The All-American’ requires surgery due to a rather concerning spinal injury, which he detailed in a graphic Facebook post yesterday. In dropping out of the event, Weidman left a gap opposite the middleweight boss Luke Rockhold, but every cloud has a silver lining.

As a result of Weidman’s injury and removal from UFC 199, we get to see another rematch, this time between the 185-pound champ Luke Rockhold and his old nemesis Michael Bisping.

michael bisping vs luke rockhold

‘Rocky’ and ‘The Count’ first squared off in Sydney, Australia in late 2014, with Rockhold furthering his claim to the title fight with Weidman by rocking and then submitting Bisping inside two rounds. After finishing Lyoto Machida, Rockhold went on to brutally batter Chris Weidman for the title in a gruelling affair at UFC 194.

Just out of interest, here’s Rockhold’s streak compared to Bisping’s:

Luke Rockhold: Costa Philippou TKO, Tim Boetsch submission, Michael Bispig submission, Lyoto Machida submission, Chris Weidman murder TKO

Michael Bisping: CB Dolloway unanimous decision, Thales Leites split decision, Anderson Silva Unanimous decision

So Luke Rockhold is the bigger man, on home turf, coming in on a streak of finishes that includes one against Michael Bisping, and has a full camp compared to two weeks notice for ‘The Count;’ Where’s the smart money going at the bookies?

Well hold your horses, because Bisping believes the short notice fight is actually in his favor…

Quote: Needles In The Ass Won’t Save ‘Fraud’ Anderson Silva, He’s A ‘P***y’

Anderson Silva will return to the UFC against veteran Michael ‘The Count’ Bisping at tomorrow’s (Sat., February 27, 2016) UFC Fight Night 84 from the O2 Arena in London, England, and true to form, the brash British trash talker has driven the smack talk with his endless criticism of ‘The Spider’s’ recent failed drug tests for two anabolic steroids.

All of the tension was ramped up at a media open workout session in Torrance, California earlier this month, where Bisping made fun of Silva’s famously blasted defense that his steroid failures had come due to a tainted sexual performance in an unmarked blue vial. The normally calm Brazilian quickly quipped that there would be no Viagra this time, only ‘my punch in (Bisping’s) face.’

It’s apparently worn on the longtime former middleweight champion, as Silva could be seen snubbing Bisping without a handshake at yesterday’s face-off from the London Tower Bridge. The discord continued on in today’s weigh-ins, where the two foes engaged in a heated staredown that required several men to step between them:

‘The Count’ was extra riled up at that point, even going as far as to put Silva on blast by calling him a ‘fraud’:

“This man is a cheat,” Bisping said. “This man is a fraud. And I will make you pay for your mistakes tomorrow night my friend. All the needles in your ass, all the steroids will not help you, you p*ssy.”

‘The Spider’ seemed calm in response, instead simply answering a question about going for another run at the belt if he beats Bisping:

“I think so,” Silva said. “I’ve been working hard for this one. I think this fight Saturday night is good for me, good for Bisping. And let’s go. It’s the show.”

It would appear that the gloves are off for this one, as both fighters appear motivated and ready to go to war. Who are you picking to emerge victorious in London tomorrow?
