Former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo will get another shot at gold when UFC 200 comes around, but it’s not what he’d hoped for. The junior belt will be on the line as the head of the division remains shrouded in a controversial stand off between Conor McGregor and the promotion. Many have argued that McGregor’s protest against his contractual obligations could go on to serve fighters of the next generation, but that probably doesn’t make the pill of an interim title any sweeter for Aldo or his July 9 opponent Frankie Edgar.

As ‘The Notorious’ continues to be heavily linked to a welterweight rematch with Nate Diaz, who had stopped Conor McGregor inside two rounds at UFC 196, the truth is that nobody knows when the 145-pound strap will be defended next. There’s even the chance that the undisputed title could in fact be on the line at UFC 200, if the rumours of McGregor not wanting to fight at featherweight again are true. With all these variables in play, a bet on either scenario would be a punt at best.

Aldo vs Edgar

‘Scarface’ was the original UFC featherweight champion, and before colliding with Conor McGregor at UFC 194 last year, was widely considered a top three pound-for-pound staple. Once the octagon door shut on Aldo and the interim champ of the time McGregor, it would only be 13 seconds and one well timed punch before all those accolades became a thing of the past. As much as you’d imagine Aldo to be humble in defeat, truth be told he really hasn’t been, but can you blame him?

At the time of the fight last December, the promotion appeared to be carving the path for McGregor’s title shot with opponent’s like Dennis Siver who, let’s be frank, had no place in the octagon with ‘The Notorious,’ let alone in a title contender fight. Perhaps that statement is slightly opinion driven, and the Irish star would later go on to defeat the wrestler Chad Mendes when Aldo was injured and pulled out of UFC 189.

Then there was the issues of Reebok, poor fighter pay and mistreatment by the UFC, problems that Jose Aldo faced head on, publicly making his stance against the promotion’s practices. Unfortunately for the Brazilian MMA legend, these opinions came back to haunt him when the UFC released harrowing scenes of his post KO loss to McGregor.

So now booked in against Frankie Edgar for the second fight in their illustrious careers, what’s driving the former champion? Yep, you guessed it, it’s a little Irish guy…

Conor McGregor is once again the subject of much debate in the mixed martial arts community, and most recently it’s been surrounding UFC 200. The second major milestone pay-per-view event for the promotion originally saw a feature rematch between McGregor and Nate Diaz as the main event, but a sequence of unexpected events put that dance to bed in a rather surprising turn of events. ‘The Notorious’ had refused to attend the first week of the media tour for UFC 200, and as a result UFC president Dana White would later confirm McGregor was no longer fighting on the July 9 card.

The news was met with varying reactions, with many predicting the whole saga was part of a media stunt by the promotion and Conor McGregor. As things transpired further, following a brief Twitter retirement by the Irish striker, it looked as though the 145-pound king really was embroiled in a legitimate beef with his employers. After a number of social media rants and appeals to be reinstated, backed up by a bogus announcement that the Diaz rematch was back on, many argued that ‘The Notorious’ has taken a little bit of a hit as far as his image is concerned.

conorpocket2[1]

Many times in the past McGregor had declared himself the face of the UFC, and perhaps the promotion didn’t like the direction they were heading with him. It sounds as though the final straw was McGregor hoping to re-dictate the terms of his recently signed contract, and the UFC was stuck between a rock and a hard place. They have this money making PPV selling machine, but suddenly he’d begun turning on his creators. A strange and somewhat unfortunate conundrum for sure.

The news of a reported fight between UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and the modern boxing great Floyd Mayweather Jr. pretty much ruptured the internet yesterday (Friday May 6, 2016). And although highly debatable as per the sources of origin and lack of confirmation, there’s one interview that everyone has slept on. Floyd Mayweather senior, father of ‘Money’ Mayweather, was asked about his son’s next fight, and his response was truly shocking…

UFC light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier was slated to return this past Saturday (April 23, 2016) at UFC 197, but was forced off the card with an injury just two weeks prior. His bitter rival and former champ Jon Jones instead faced Ovince St-Preux in the main event of the Las Vegas pay-per-view, defeating him by unanimous decision and winning the interim title in the process. The win set up the inevitable rematch between “DC” and “Bones,” which has been brewing since their first fight back in January 015.

So much has happened in that time, and Jones came very close to serving a prison sentence while Cormier was enjoying the life of the 205-pound champion. Taking on and submitting Anthony Johnson at UFC 187, “DC” would go on to defed once against Alexander Gustafsso while Jones worked out his troubles following the infamous New Mexico hit-and-run.

DC vs. Jon Jones

Cormier’s loss that night on January 3 at UFC 182 left a lot of questions unanswered, and did little to settle the beef between the two light-heavyweight titans. Although there was no question who’d won the fight, it was clearly neither man’s greatest performance. Fast forward to present day, and “DC” said he could’ve easily beaten the “Bones” that showed up against OSP, and suddenly a spot on a huge PPV card had opened up unexpectedly.

Once Conor McGregor was pulled from UFC 200 for refusing to attend his first media obligations for the event, speculation raged as to who would replace ‘The Notorious’ opposite Nate Diaz in the main event. Then Diaz declared he was now ‘on vacation,’ and all of a sudden there’s scope for a big title fight to headline the landmark event. A perfect opportunity for Cormier vs. Jones 2? Yup, and here’s the condition “DC” laid out for taking that spot:

With the super stacked UFC 198 card in Brazil, and also to an extent UFC 199, taking up a whole bunch of the promotion’s top talent, is there really any other option for UFC 200? With McGregor declaring he was back on the card before being shot down by Dana White, the rift between their marquis star and the organization could potentially be growing.

How would you feel about the UFC 200 card if it was headlined by Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones 2, and Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar for the interim (or maybe undisputed?) featherweight strap?

After all is said and done, hasn’t McGregor put in a ton of work already?

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is unique in many ways. He has a natural talent for both fighting and selling events for the promotion, something the UFC is not used to at this level. So grand is McGregor’s gift of the gab that many argue he has began to surpass the promotion itself in popularity, something that UFC president Dana White is clearly not happy with. All this has led to a week of constant McGregor and UFC 200 headlines, each of which stemmed from this single Tweet.

Conor McGregor’s retirement Tweet this past Tuesday set in motion a set of highly unexpected happenings, and eventually led to the highly entertaining UFC 200 press conference last night, at which ‘The Notorious’ was not present. Although he had swiftly un-retired just days after that first announcement, the damage was apparently already done. The beef seems to have come from McGregor’s reluctance to attend the first week of media obligations for his scheduled UFC 200 rematch with Nate Diaz, something the promotion was not willing to accept.

Dana White confirmed that McGregor was being pulled from the July 9 mega fight with Diaz, in a strange twist of circumstances. We all sat back and witnessed the Irish star rise to prominence in just a matter of years under the UFC banner, and suddenly he is throwing a spanner in the works in the form of his pseudo retirement and refusal to commit to the media tour. So how/why has this happened? Well, assuming that the facts thus far are accurate, this seems to be a kind of phallic comparison between McGregor and the UFC brass.

During the UFC 200 presser last night (April 22, 2016) McGregor sent out another Tweet, this time pointing out how much he’d made the UFC in his last eight month/three fight stretch…

It’s not long now (hopefully) until we see Conor McGregor fight Nate Diaz at UFC 200. The two colorful characters first faced off at UFC 196 back in March, and it was a typical cult hero vs. theatrical villain kind of affair. McGregor had rallied ticket sales in al his previous fights using his razor sharp wit and excellent ability to break his opponents just using the power of speech. He tried his old tricks against Diaz when Rafael dos Anjos fell out from the original booking, but it turned out the Stockton grappler wasn’t going to be playing those games.

Diaz stood firm in the midst of a barrage of trash talk from McGregor in the 11 days leading up to their fight, and made the Irish star eat his words when they eventually collided in the octagon.

nate-diaz-conor-mcgregor-mma-ufc-196-mcgregor-vs-diaz-4[1]

McGregor gassed coming in to the second round of their highly entertaining bout, and Diaz smelled ‘red panty night’ in the making. ‘The Notorious’ had thrown everything at Diaz, yet the chin was holding up just fine. Just as the Diaz brothers had predicted, McGregor shot for the takedown, and it was just over from that point on. Diaz sunk in the fight finishing rear naked choke, and suddenly the UFC’s plans had been shattered, or so it seemed.

A. McGregor 1

So win or lose, surely it’s back to the featherweight division for McGregor after this fight. Of course there’s always the possibility the UFC will see cash signs in a potential lightweight title fight, but surely the circus at the top of the 145-pound category needs sorting out first. So if he indeed does go back down, but loses his title, what happens next?

Controversial submission artist Rousimar Palhares is currently banished from competing state side in mixed martial arts, coming after a period of momentum that saw ‘Toquinho’ at the peak of his career thus far. After being canned by the UFC for numerous occasions of not releasing submission holds in a timely manner, Palhares transferred quickly to the World Series of Fighting. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ace signed with Ray Sefo’s budding organization in March 2014 at WSOF 9, and won the welterweight title in his debut against Steve Carl.

He defended against fellow UFC castaway Jon Fitch at WSOF 16 with his trademark heel hook, but once again delved in to the deep hole he’d dug himself so many times in the past. This time it was Jake Shields who made some shocking accusations against Palhares, claiming the Brazilian had gouged his eyes throughout their WSOF 22 title bout, and that the fight ending submission was not released in good time. The Nevada State Athletic Commission agreed on both counts, and Palhares was stripped of the title and banned from fighting for two years.

Now relegated to submission tournaments such as Polaris 3, where he recently fought to a draw against Gary Tonon, it looks as though Palhares might have a hard time finding another fight, or at least that’s what we all thought. Newly formed Italian MMA promotion Venator recently announced the banned ‘Paul Harris’ would be facing Emil Meek on their May 21 card. WSOF officials vowed to put a halt to this, and the situation remains tentative at best.

Having grappled with Tonon in the United Kingdom this past weekend, Rousimar Palhares spoke with the Daily Mail in a rare interview, and made some very interesting statements. Check it out:

RousimarPalharesBoxing

‘I know I have an image as a bad boy in the ring but that is not the person that I am underneath. If people got to really know me they would see what I am really like.

‘I have made some mistakes in the past and during fights but I am a good person. I am seen as bad but that is its during the fight. A fight is a fight and sometimes my mindset changes when I get in there.’

‘The arrival of my baby boy two months ago has given me a new perspective on life and on fighting. I will still win at all costs but now I am grounded,’ said Palhares.

‘I am not a monster but I know that many people think I fight like one. People ask me why I am like how I am in the ring but if everyone knew about my childhood then they would understand.’

‘The feeling I get when I go into the octagon is difficult to explain. I am filled with happiness and joy. It is what I do. Fighting is what I am good but I don’t want to particularly hurt the other fighter.’

‘I would consider returning to the UFC just to fight McGregor, ‘ he said….
