Conor McGregor

Retired lightweight veteran, Joe Duffy has accused former opponent and one-time undisputed featherweight and lightweight UFC champion, Conor McGregor of attempting to alienate Irish fans against him during their respective Octagon tenures.

Joe Duffy handed Conor McGregor a 2010 submission defeat

Duffy, a past opponent of the Dubliner, handed Conor McGregor his second professional mixed martial arts in the form of a 38-second arm-triangle submission defeat at Cage Warriors 39 in 2010 in Cork.

Conor McGregor would go on to begin a stunning 15-fight winning spree post-loss to Duffy back in 2010, leading himself to the eventual interim and undisputed UFC featherweight title after achieving duel-weight titleholder status in the Cage Warriors promotion as well.

Calling time on his professional career back in July 2020, Donegal-born favorite, Duffy suffered his third consecutive defeat in the form of a ‘Fight Island’ guillotine loss against Spanish grappler, Joel Alvarez.

Sharing his thoughts on his often scrutinized relationship with McGregor following a brief run in at a 2015 UFC ‘Go Big’ press conference, Duffy claimed that the Crumlin native attempted to turn the Irish contingent of fans against him.

“Conor (McGregor) tried to kind of turn the fans against me then because he probably didn’t like the attention that I (had), and obviously the tie between us, was getting at the time,” Joe Duffy told The Auld Triangle Irish MMA Podcast with hosts, Andy Stevenson, Caoilte de Barra, and Ian O’Neill during a recent appearance.

“So that was something frustrating too because obviously, that’s something I’ve obviously been proud of,” Joe Duffy explained. “Even through I grew up in Wales, I was obviously a proud Irishman.”

“That was annoying because that’s one of the reasons you’re fighting because you’re proud of your country and you want to represent it.” (Transcribed by TalkSport)

Expected to make his long-awaited UFC return at the end of the year, if not at the beginning of 2023 as per Dana White, McGregor has been sidelined since suffering a fractured tibia in his UFC 264 trilogy rubber match with common-foe, Dustin Poirier in July of last year.

How would a UFC star fare in the boxing ring?

That’s the question everybody seems to be debating in the build-up to Conor McGregor’s blockbuster fight with Floyd Mayweather on August 26th, but it’s worth keeping in mind that ‘The Notorious’ is far from the first UFC fighter to have fought in the squared circle.

In all fairness, the circumstances surrounding McGregor Vs Mayweather are unique. We’ve never seen anything of this magnitude before – a UFC champion at the peak of their career head to the boxing ring, let alone agreeing to face one of that sport’s all-time greats.

Nevertheless, there are a number of fighters currently fighting in the UFC who do have professional boxing bouts on their records, often from much earlier in their career’s, and in this article, we’ll take a closer look at how they did – from the good and the bad through the downright ugly.

Anderson Silva

One of MMA’s all-time greats, Anderson Silva has also tested his skills in the boxing ring twice during his combat sports career.

His pro boxing debut took place in his native Brazil all the way back in 1998 when he was just 23 years old. At the time he was only just getting started in his MMA career too, with both of his wins at the time having come during a single-night tournament a year earlier.

Despite his lack of experience, Silva was handed a tough first outing against Osmar Luiz Teixeira, a cruiserweight (200 pounds) who held an 8-2 boxing record and had finished six of his fights inside the distance.

No video or photographs exist of the fight, but officially it was recorded as a victory for Teixeira due to Silva retiring after the second round, allegedly due to body shots.

After a two year absence, Silva returned to MMA, and by 2005 had amassed a 15-3 record, but after surpisingly being released by the PRIDE organization, he briefly opted to return to the boxing ring.

This time he faced Julio Cesar de Jesus, a newcomer who would prove to be no match for Silva’s by-now seasoned striking and was finished with punches to the body and head in the second round.

It wasn’t long before Silva signed for the UFC and he would go on to achieve superstardom as their long-reigning middleweight champion, but over the years he’s also harbored an ambition to fight legendary boxer Roy Jones Jr in the ring.

However, despite both indicating their interest in the match-up, this particular super fight has never come to fruition.

145 lbs: Arnold Allen vs. Makwan Amirkhan

Londoners are in for a great night at UFC Fight Night 107 with a pretty nice line up in most categories. The 145 pound bout features Arnold Allen (11-1) vs. Makwan Amirkhan (13-2). The young pair is likely to fight a close match since both of them are talented and are expected to knock off many of their opponents in the coming years.

Allen’s debut in debut in 2015 was notable. After submitting Alan Omer he took on Yaotzin Meza six months later and won a cracker of a fight. Allen has managed to evolve into a well rounded fighter with tenacity although he may seem to drift at times. Amirkhan on the other hand is an aggressive opponent with the unique ability to go for broke no matter what his position. This game-plan could work and we may seem Amirkhan getting the better of Allen by submission.

155 lbs.: Joe Duffy vs. Reza Madadi

Joe Duffy (15-2) faces off Reza Madadi in the 155lbs category at UFC Fight Night 107 in London. As we recall, Duffy started his UFC career with two amazing wins that did not last 5 minutes in total against Jake Lindsey and Ivan Jorge. His next bout was well fought as well where he dropped a decision to Dustin Poirier. He then dropped and submitted Mitch Clarke six months later. With 10 submission and 4 knockouts in the early round it won’t seem likely that many will bet against Duffy.

Reza Madadi returned to the cage after 18 months following brushes with the law. He dropped a decision to Norman Parke and then scored a knock out against Yan Cabral in their Rotterdam fight. He has submitted eight opponents and has a top game that is seemingly effecting. His wrestling prowess is better than most in the lightweight category. However, lack of speed and striking attack could be Madadi’s downfall. It would make sense to put a few bucks on Duffy who should get through with a unanimous decision.
