Rory MacDonald hopes to ‘make his name’ against middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi at Bellator 206.

As soon as MacDonald signed with the Scott Coker-run promotion, speculation began. What division would Rory Mac compete in? Could he really become a two-division champ?

One of those questions has already been answered and we will watch in anticipation Saturday night (Sept. 29, 2018) as MacDonald tries to capture the middleweight strap from Mousasi.

Although Coker wasn’t too keen on the potential superfight between these two initially, after Mousasi ran through Rafael Carvalho to win the 185-pound title, he changed his tune:

“We’ve got to make this fight happen,” said Coker following Mousasi’s title-winning performance.

“I think he didn’t want to rush into it,” MacDonald told MMAjunkie. “He wanted to make sure he could connect the dots first.”

More likely Coker envisioned a future for Rory that revolved around Grand Prix-style tournaments.

Regardless, MacDonald couldn’t be happier at the way everything has worked out. MacDonald has the opportunity to become only the sixth fighter in MMA history to hold two titles simultaneously in the UFC or Bellator.

The others are Randy Couture, BJ Penn, Conor McGregor, Georges St-Pierre, and most recently Daniel Cormier. The former UFC contender is relishing in the opportunity:

“It could be one of those fights that make my name,” MacDonald said. “It’s rare that you get a multi-weight champ, so it’s cool. It’s a great opportunity to be recognized in the sport as someone who’s not afraid to take risks.”

Even if the risk doesn’t pan out for MacDonald, he will still walk away as the welterweight champ.

But the Canadian will have a quick turnaround. He’s set to defend his title in the opening round of the welterweight GP against Jon Fitch next month.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is still a niche sport, but 10 MMA fighters have mainstream net worth.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is celebrating its 25th year anniversary in 2019. MMA, as we know it, has grown leaps and bounds since the days of ‘No Holds Barred’ fights and 300-pound tough guys. Although the sport has made considerable progress in becoming a mainstream attraction, some problems still persist – mainly in the oft-discussed area of fighter pay.

MMA is a professional sport; however, the athletes competing aren’t exactly raking in NFL or NBA money. After all expenses are accounted for the average UFC fighter earned somewhere in the neighborhood of $132,109 in 2017.

However, these 10 MMA fighters have figured out a way to break the bank.

Here is LowkickMMA’s list of 10 MMA fighters with the richest net worths.

George St-Pierre Praises ‘Smart’ Chael Sonnen For Best Weight Cutting Solution

Former two division champion George St-Pierre believes when it comes to weight cutting Chael Sonnen knows his stuff.

As the weight cutting debate rages on in MMA, George St-Pierre praises ‘smart’ Chael Sonnen for his possible solution to the fiasco.

No one has been able to figure out the perfect solution to the weight cutting problem in MMA. Nor has anyone had that eureka moment that leads to a monumental breakthrough in the science behind the idea either. But GSP believes Sonnen is on the right track.

GSP stated that due to Sonnen’s many years of wrestling experience that he is uniquly credentialed in this arena. Further expressing he is on board with whatever the ‘bad guy’ says regarding weight cutting.

“(Sonnen) proposed to do a weigh-in the day of the fight,” St-Pierre said during a news conference in Australia that was captured by Submission Radio. “So what he proposes, basically – we have weigh-in the night before the fight, like we normally do. But now, because the weigh-in is in the morning, people say, ‘Oh, I have more time to recuperate,’ so they try to cut more weight.”

“And it’s sad to say, but sometimes I’m thinking, ‘Are we going to wait (for) someone (to) die out there to change things?’ I mean, it’s ridiculous. So what Chael’s proposed is very smart.”

St-Pierre’s concerns are legitimate. A recent example of the weight cutting fiasco is the soon to be welterweight title challenger Darren Till. Just days after his fight against Stephen Thompson a video surfaced of Till in an extream dehydration state stumbling on a treadmill. Thankfully Till was not seriously hurt but accidental deaths do occur in athletics.

Being that the UFC is the premier MMA promotion in the world they are usually always out ahead of such issues. But the weight cutting situation is a tricky one. Dana White and company have tried some ‘new’ innovations. For instance the early weigh-ins, however, those soon to be extinct as well.

“If you make a weigh-in the day of the event, a lot of guys will lose weight, but they won’t lose in terms of (dehydration) weight,” St-Pierre said. “You know that if you go in to compete the same day you can’t dehydrate yourself. If you weigh in an hour before your competition. That’s what they used to do in amateur wrestling in the United States and you know how many people miss weight? Zero. So, now, it’s very weird that in a professional sport, in a professional organization, at the highest level, that people miss weight.”

“I think they need to change not the individual, they need to change the system. I think the system can be made better. I’m not saying that Chael’s proposition is the best. But I think it’s the best that we know of right now. I think it would be the best solution.”

Randy Couture Praises ‘Brilliant’ Khabib Nurmagomedov

Randy Couture is a big fan of Khabib for certain reasons.

Randy Couture praises UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov for his fighting style while talking about the upcoming showdown between the king of the 155 lb division and Conor McGregor.

The Fight

The former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion is slated to challenge Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title at the UFC 229 pay-per-view event.

Randy Couture Praises

Couture is widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters in the history of MMA as he is a three-time heavyweight and two-time light heavyweight UFC champion. He has been out of the fight game since 2011. His last fight came after suffering a KO loss to former light heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida. However, Couture still has an eye for talent.

In a recent interview with MMAJunkie, Couture talked about Nurmagomedov and why he is such a favorite of the champion.

The reasons for that is due to Nurmagomedov not being a big trash talker and his grinding style of fighting.

“Not only does he not run his mouth and all the extracurricular stuff, but he’s got that grinding style that was kind of my forte,” Couture said. “So, I like the way he fights. Some people don’t like the way he fights – I think he’s brilliant.

“I think he’s exactly the type of fighter that’s going to give Conor McGregor trouble. We’ve seen that a little bit with Chad Mendes.

We saw it a little bit with Nate Diaz. That style that forces him to fight on the ground off his back potentially is a style that’s going to give him trouble.”

The UFC 229 pay-per-view event is slated to take place on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.
